Watch!: Many of your creations have been constructed from inspiring materials, such as vinyl, cork, wallpaper, Lucite and 24-karat gold. Which is your favorite?
Stuart Weitzman: The fi rst award I received was for my contribution to the bridal industry. This romantic lace bridal shoe has its own special place in my heart. W: Do you design with particular individuals or personalities in mind? SW: My entire collection is created with wants, desires and needs in mind. Certainly, muses who represent each of our varied clients are my inspiration.

W: Do you select your wife Jane’s shoes?
SW: Jane is sure of her needs and does a better job of selecting the shoes she prefers than I can!

W: Is there someone in particular whom you would you love to see wearing your shoes?
SW: Marilyn Monroe—my impossible dream.

W: Do you have other outlets, artistic or otherwise?
SW: My hobby as a child was drawing and constructing artlike objects. As I now work at my hobby, my other diversion has been sports; I ski and play Ping-Pong.

W: Your fall/winter 2007 collection is sensational. Where do you get your cues for a collection?
SW: Women in general inspire me. So does architecture and art, and then there is the trusty idea that just pops out of my head.

W: You have continued to expand beyond shoes with your handbag collection. With devotees, including actresses Eva Mendes, Rachel McAdams and Jennifer Hudson, and such enticing names as Trot, Luna and Fang, it’s no wonder the collection is garnering such attention. Care to share the formula?
SW: We launched the collection of day-toevening bags this spring with playfully glamorous women in mind. They’ve been very well received, probably because they are fashionable—which is what our customers expects from us—but also because fi t and function weren’t left behind in the process.

W: Of your peers, whose work do you most admire?
SW: I do not think much about this, but I admire what Roland Jourdan created at Charles Jourdan, and Manolo Blahnik for the commitment and talent he shows in his vision for women’s footwear.

W: Would you design a men’s line?
SW: To design men’s footwear seems boring when I am so used to the unlimited world of women’s fashion. So, probably no.

W: You and your wife have dedicated yourselves to several charitable pursuits. Would you share some of your efforts?
SW: Jane is truly the inspiration here. A great part of her time is devoted to giving back. She is dedicated to many causes, but among those closest to her heart are breast and ovarian cancer research.

W: Do you have a mantra? Words to live by?
SW: If work is a great part of your life, do something you love. Work hard to create a loving family and great friendships. They will help overcome most of life’s problems. Recognizing that having all you want is not life’s guarantee, but doing the most with all you have and sharing it usually can be.
